Dr. Nana (Hyung-Ran) Lee holds a PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Toronto, a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Michigan and was a Visiting Scholar at Whitehead (Broad) Institute for Biomedical Research, MIT. Her roles in the biotechnology industry include Senior Research Scientist and Director of Application Science. She currently holds the position of Director and Associate Professor, Teaching Stream of Graduate Professional Development (GPD) at Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto.
Dr. Lee co-pioneered the implementation of curriculum-embedded graduate professional development (GPD) with the pilot course in 2012 being highlighted in Science Careers, Since then, the GPD course has been implemented in several other departments and universities. She has been awarded trainee and faculty development grants from CIHR and U of Toronto’s School of Graduate Studies (SGS). Dr. Lee has led several Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Wellness Committees for both the Departments of Immunology and Biochemistry. She co-chaired the faculty-wide report on “Applying an EDI Lens to Graduate Admissions and Outreach” and is a member of the working group at SGS for Healthy Labs and Research Teams.
She expanded her scholarship in trainee professional development and inclusive mentorship practices during her sabbatical at Harvard Medical School and Stanford University in 2022-2023. Dr. Lee has given over 150 workshops and talks to over 3500 learners around the world, received the 2022 Faculty of Medicine’s Excellence in Professional Values Award, and launches the second edition of her book “Success In Graduate School and Beyond” in Spring of 2024.
