About Dr. Nancy Fowler

Dr. Nancy Fowler is the Executive Director, Academic Family Medicine at the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC); overseeing the development and implementation of the standards of training and certification for family physicians in Canada, as well as working to advance family medicine education and research with universities and other partner organizations. Dr. Fowler is a family physician and Associate Professor with 30 years of clinical and academic experience based in Hamilton Ontario affiliated with the McMaster University Department of Family Medicine.

As a former residency program director at McMaster, Dr. Fowler was instrumental in program expansion and development of a rural training stream as well as introduction of the CFPC’s Triple C Competency-based curriculum. She has a long history of leadership and scholarship in the areas of medical education and refugee health. Dr. Fowler is the winner of several national awards including the CFPC Geeta Gupta Award honouring a family physician devoted to working with minority and ethnic communities, and who has shown leadership in caring for diverse patients or populations.

In 2015, Dr. Nancy Fowler was presented with the Ian McWhinney Family Medicine Education award, one of the CFPC’s top honours presented to a family medicine teacher for outstanding contribution to family medicine education.

Dr. Fowler believes strongly in family medicine as a force for good in the world. She lives in Hamilton, Ontario with her husband and spends most of her free time enjoying the company of her children and grandchildren.
