SYNOPSIS

Excellence in medical education is increasingly being judged through the lens of public good. Accreditation in Canada now requires medical schools to demonstrate how they are impacting the priority health needs of local citizens and society, beyond just graduating a fit-for-purpose workforce. The goal of positively impacting population health outcomes has become a driving force behind an international movement to advance social accountability and accreditation standards. This workshop builds upon the work of the AFMC International Think Tank on Accreditation and Social Accountability and will endeavor to share evidence about accreditation as a lever for change and highlight steps being taken towards building consensus around medical education accreditation standards for better care.

At the end of this session, participants will:

  1. Provide participants with an overview of what has been done to advance social accountability and accreditation and what is being planned; specifically international efforts to build consensus;
  2. Provide participants an opportunity to learn from international leaders in accreditation research and social accountability and identify ways to get involved.
