SYNOPSIS

The AFMC Gold Humanism Award and Lecture was created in 2018 to emphasize, reinforce and enhance the importance of humanistic qualities in healthcare and academic medicine. Every year, the recipient of the AFMC Gold Humanism Award is invited to deliver a lecture at the International Congress on Academic Medicine (ICAM).

The lecture will focus on the needs of learners in the clinical setting illustrating how these needs are occasionally misaligned with the practices and priorities of clinical teachers. A simple model, based on a three level curricular edifice, will be presented as a possible corrective lens.

At the end of this session, participants will:

  1. Categorize learner needs, based on a simple three-level framework for a curricular edifice;
  2. Define and recognize phatic communication;
  3. Define and discuss clinical wisdom.
